Dmitri Shostakovich's cycle of "24 Preludes
and Fuges", Op. 87 was written during an amazingly short period of
time from October 1950 to March 1951. Inspired by his trip to Leipzig,
the place where J.S. Bach died 200 years before, Shostakovich created 24
masterpieces that can be compared to Bachs cycle.
Tatiana Nikolaeva, USSR Peoples Artist, graduated with honors from two
departments of the Moscow Conservatory: piano and composition. She is a
winner of the Scriabin competition in Moscow, the First International Festival
of Democratic Youth in Prague and the JS Bach competition in Leipzig.
She started her piano concerts as a student and later played in over forty
countries of the world. She has a large repertoire which combines the most
important works of classical piano literature.
T. Nikolaeva has been playing Shostakovichs "24 Preludes and Fugues"
for over 30 years.
