Sergei Rachmaninov composed Symphony #2 in E minor, Op. 27 in 1907. The symphony dedicated to S. Taneyev was premiered under the author’s baton on January 26 in St. Petersburg (Mariinsky Theatre), then it was performed in Moscow (Bolshoi Theatre) on February 2.
Symphony No. 2 is characterized by richness of melody, striking with the breadth of symphonic forms. The symphony’s color is vividly national, originally combining the epuic style of A. Borodin and the lyrical style of P. Tchaikovsky.
Fantasia "The Rock" is one of the first significant orchestral works by S. Rachmaninov. He started working over it in the summer of 1893; in autumn he played it to a group of musicians gathered at Taneyev’s. "The Rock" is dedicated to N. Rimsky-Korsakov and was created under the influence of his orchestral works. M. Lermontov's verse of the same name also prompted S. Rachmaninov to create the Fantasia.
