At the age of five Pavel Chesnokov began singing in a church choir and at seven studying at the Moscow Synodal College of Church Singing. The college was graduated in 1895 with the golden medal. During his years in college Chesnokov's inclination for musical composition became obvious. After graduation from the college, Chesnokov studied under S. Taneyev and M. Ippolitov-Ivanov at the Moscow Conservatory. Upon completion of the studies Chesnokov accepted positions of the Moscow State Choir and the Academic Choir director, became a professor of the Moscow Conservatory. Chesnokov composed more than fifty works for choir, both sacred and secular. Beautiful, rich melodies and deep knowledge of choral composition techniques are inalienable features of his music.
Sergei Taneyev dedicated himself to the service of Russian musical culture as an outstanding composer, pianist, conductor and teacher. He is the author of about seventy works for choir a cappella and three cantatas.
