EVGENI KOSTITSYN: 23 Preludes & Fugues for piano.

The genre of 24 Preludes & Fugues has existed for about 300 years now. During this time, several cycles consisting of twenty-four Preludes and Fugues have been composed.
My 23 Preludes & Fugues were composed in 2005 to mark the centenary of the birth of Dmitri Shostakovich. In 1950, Shostakovich composed his own 24 Preludes & Fugues marking the bicentennial of Bach's death.
     Q: Why 23?
A: Because 24 would be a musical atavism in the post-tonal world.
I was very interested to explore various principles forming the Preludes and Fugues cycle, gravitation and correlation of its movements. These can be very different. For example, my Prelude & Fugue XXII, the Prelude and the Fugue sound simultaneously. There are also 23 smaller two-movement cycles inside the big one.
I have utilized different musical styles, composition techniques and textures throughout. There are a number of quotations, quasi-quotations, allusions and references. There are ordinary fugues, double and triple fugues. The number of voices vary from 2 to 6.
Music score of 23 P&F along with numerous audio excerpts are available free at www.kostitsyn.org
The complete recording of 23 Preludes and Fugues is available in mp3 format from all major mp3 outlets.
